Desmond Obe
Founder and Chief Executive Officer · AI engineer and researcher
Desmond is an AI engineer and researcher with more than eight years across the engineering and IT sectors. He founded DesMind to turn advanced technology into secure, dependable systems, and he leads the company's strategy, engineering and research.
Educated across three countries
Desmond earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Engineering and a Master of Engineering in Power Electronics, with Distinction, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. As a JASSO scholar at Hokkaido University in Japan, he researched energy policy for wind and thermal systems. In Australia he completed a Master of Information Technology with Distinction at James Cook University, where he is now a PhD candidate in Artificial Intelligence researching privacy-preserving AI for assessment and intervention in mental health.
Across engineering and IT
His career began with electrical and solar installation projects at Palm Tree Technology, followed by systems administration and IT support for more than 100 users at a 95% first-call resolution rate. As a Network Analyst Engineer at Globacom, he cut base-station downtime by about 10% and raised network capacity by about 25%. He went on to build cloud web and mobile applications on AWS and Azure at Nanocodes Programming, and to run Microsoft 365 and cloud operations for Study Cairns and Risk 2 Solution Group. As a Machine Learning Engineer at JutaLab, he builds production machine-learning pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation systems and large language model integrations.
Research and academic work
Alongside his doctoral research, Desmond works as a Casual Academic at James Cook University in the Advanced Mobile Technology and Mobile Computing subjects. His research is published in IET Power Electronics, the Journal of Power Electronics, the Journal of Energy Systems and Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. His current work examines how conversational AI can support perinatal mental health safely and privately.
